COVID-19 Updates

The Delta variant continues to cause a surge in Covid-19 cases, bringing mask mandates and news updates. Here are things to know this week:

Masks: Required in all indoor spaces in the state, regardless of vaccination status. As of August 27, masks are required in public outdoor settings where social distancing is not possible, like concerts and fairs, for all Oregonians 5 and older. Oregon K-12 schools are exempt from the mandate for outdoors masks but if there is a spectator event on school grounds, masks are required.

COVID-19 Cases: As of August 30, Oregon is averaging 2,203 cases per day.In Washington County, the weekly average is 156. On August 27, 227 new cases were reported. 

Hospitalization News:As of August 30, hospitals around the state have reached 96% capacity. 

Pediatric Cases: There has been a dramatic increase in cases among those under 18 years old since July and the Oregon Health Authority is reporting that these increases are higher among those who identify as Hispanic. 

The number of hospitalizations: 1,098

The number of patients in the ICU: 308

Legacy Health announced that all non-urgent surgeries will be paused for 2 weeks.

Vaccine News: The FDA has granted full approval of the Pfizer vaccine for individuals 16 and older, while it remains under Emergency Use Authorization for those 12 – 15 years old. With the approval, vaccine mandates have been issued nationwide, including a few here in Oregon. All healthcare workers and educators in the state are required to get the vaccine, effective this fall. 

Vaccine Numbers: Statewide, 71.9% are have gotten vaccinated. Of that, 66.1% are fully vaccinated and 5.7% have received at least one dose. 

In Washington County, 78% are vaccinated, with 73.5% fully vaccinated and 4.7% in progress with at least one dose. 

Washington County has the best vaccination rate in the state as of August 27. Thank you for protecting yourself and the community. It is the best way to combat this virus. All three vaccines available provide protection against the Delta variant. It is free, now widely available and safe.
