Working with the Valley Migrant League, he collaborated with fellow Mt. Angel Student, Jose Garcia, and 12 Mexican families to start the Los Amigos Club, which established ways for farmworker families to settle in Washington County. It’s aim was to stop the cycle of poverty among migrant Latinx/a/o, Chicanx/a/o, and Tejanx/a/o farmworkers by helping families buy homes and to provide social and educational services.

Jaime grew up in Mexico in the state of Morelos, the youngest of ten in a farming family. Two of his brothers participated in the Braceros program, coming to the states to pick crops and Jaime remembers waiting on the checks they would send home. Early on, Jaime wanted an education. At 12 years old, when a priest came to his school and asked, “Who wants to go to seminary to study?” Jaime didn’t know what seminary was but he raised his hand.

“My whole life has been a constant process of education,” said Jaime, going on to receive his BA, MA and M.
